Mw 6.9 Andreanof Islands, Aleutian Islands, Alaska

updated 23 December 2022

report

On 27 January 1906 a strong earthquake occurred at Andreanof Islands, Aleutian Islands, Alaska at a depth of 15 km. The seismic event occurred at 09:40:55 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.9.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event are lunar semi-right angles with Uranus and Neptune on 26 January 1906.

In 1906 Uranus and Neptune were on opposite sides of the Solar System. This resulted several times in (near) conjunctions with Earth as well as critical lunar geometry with both outer planets. This type of lunar geometry with outer planets is associated with major to great earthquakes and several of them occurred in 1905 and 1906 following this geometry. In 1906 alone 22 earthquakes occurred with magnitude 7 and larger, seven of which with magnitude 7.8 and larger and five with magnitude 8.

In January 1906 Earth was moving towards the Uranus-Neptune line, similar to March-April 1905. On 25 January, two days before the earthquake, the near planetary conjunction was less than 2° (1°19'43"), which caused frequent critical lunar geometry with the outer planets within hours. On 22 January, a day after a major earthquake in Japan, lunar conjunctions occurred with Uranus and Neptune within about 4 hours, followed by semi-right angles on 26 January, a day before the strong earthquake at Alaska, which is estimated to be the primary trigger. In addition, critical lunar geometry (no conjunction) occurred with Jupiter and Saturn within 9 hours, which may have been a contributing factor. Opposing lunar right angles with Uranus and Neptune, which are associated with major to great earthquakes, occurred on 29 January, 2 days before the mega-thrust earthquake near Ecuador.
