On 18 March 2023 a strong earthquake occurred near the coast of Ecuador at a depth of 66 km. The seismic event occurred at 17:12:53 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.8.
The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a near quadruple planetary conjunction from 15 to 17 March 2023.
From 15 to 17 March four planetary conjunctions converged due to a near quadruple conjunction involving Earth, the Sun, Mercury and Neptune. A major earthquake occurred early on 16 March.
