On 16 March 2023 a major earthquake occurred at Kermadec Islands Region at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 00:56:01 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.1.
The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of critical planetary and lunar geometry on 15 March 2023.
On 13 March some critical planetary geometry resulted in a strong earthquake on 14 March. This geometry was followed by a lunar conjunction with Mars and Earth's conjunction with the Sun and Neptune on 15 March. A near quadruple conjunction with Earth, the Sun, Mercury and Neptune occurred from 15 to 17 March. A second strong earthquake occurred two days later.
