On 2 November 2022 a strong earthquake occurred in the South Sandwich Islands Region at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 14:17:50 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.1.
Stronger seismic activity up to mid 6 magnitude was anticipated, primarily due to a lunar conjunction with Saturn on 1 November. The tremor occurred at the end of the lunar peak that reached index 16. Another strong earthquake occurred several hours earlier.
