Mw 6.7 New Guinea, P.N.G.

On 6 March 2018 a strong earthquake occurred in New Guinea, P.N.G. at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 14:13:06 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.7.

While this earthquake could be considered an aftershock of the major earthquake in the region on 25 February, we see a series of seven alignments from 2 to 5 March. Based on this geometry seismic activity could have been considerably larger from approximately 5 to 8 March. Instead, only two strong earthquakes occurred, one on the 6th and one on the 8th. It should be noted that after the major earthquake on 25 February, Earth did not produce major seismic activity until 19 August. Especially from 5 May to 4 August there was an obvious seismic lull with only a few earthquakes reaching Mw 6.4. This particular time-frame exactly matched the heightened activity at Hawaii.
