Mw 6.9 Solomon Islands
updated 9 August 2021

On 9 December 2016 a strong earthquake occurred at the Solomon Islands at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 19:10:05 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.9.

This is an aftershock of the major earthquake (Mw 7.8) that occurred a day earlier. Planetary geometry became critical three days earlier with the Venus-Sun-Jupiter alignment on the 6th, after which lunar geometry peaked 12 on the SSG index. Especially critical was the Sun-Mercury-Neptune alignment on the 7th. It resulted in strong to major seismic activity on the 8th.
