Mw 9.3 Off West Coast of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia

updated 27 March 2025

report

On 26 December 2004 a mega-thrust earthquake occurred near the West coast of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 00:58:50 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 9.3 according to the EMSC. The USGS estimated a magnitude 9.1. It was the second/third largest earthquake in recorded history, surpassed only by the great Valdivia earthquake (Mw 9.4-9.6) in 1960 and arguably the great Alaska earthquake (Mw 9.2) in 1964. The great earthquake on 26 December 2004 is also referred to as the Boxing Day earthquake. It ruptured a fault length of 1300 km between Northern Sumatra and the Andaman Islands and caused major tsunamis in several countries around the Northeastern Indian Ocean, including Sumatra, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India. The total number of fatalities is estimated to be around 230,000.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is critical lunar geometry on 20-22 and possibly 24-26 December 2004.

The planetary conjunction Mercury-Sun-Neptune on 19 December 2004 was followed by critical lunar geometry, most notably a conjunction with Jupiter on 20 December and right angles with Saturn and Neptune on 20-22 December. Very significant was the planetary right angle of Venus with Earth and Uranus late on the 22nd. This geometry already resulted in a great earthquake on 23 December. The next planetary conjunction Mercury-Sun-Uranus on 23 December converged with the next lunar peak, partly due to a conjunction with Mars. Right angle lunar geometry similar to 20-22 December also occurred on 23-24 December involving Saturn and Uranus. Planetary right angle geometry with Mercury, Venus and Uranus - equally critical to the right angle of Venus on the 22nd, occurred on 24 and 25 December as a typical pair, associated with major earthquakes. Especially the right angle of Venus with Mercury and Uranus early on the 25th was key. At the time of the mega-thrust earthquake a Sun-Venus-Mars conjunction occurred, several hours later followed by Full Moon. The convergence of significant planetary geometry from 22 to 25 December, towards Full Moon was a unique configuration that resulted in two earthquakes above magnitude 8 in different regions within three days.
