Mw 8.1 North of Macquarie Island

On 23 December 2004 a great earthquake occurred north of Macquarie Island at a depth of 33 km. The seismic event occurred at 14:59:11 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 8.1.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is critical lunar geometry on 20-22 December.

The Mercury-Sun-Neptune conjunction on 19 December 2004 was followed by lunar conjunctions with Jupiter and Mars on 20 and 23 December. At the time of these conjunctions opposing lunar right angles occurred uninterruptedly on 20 and 22 December with Saturn and Neptune. Critical planetary geometry with Mercury and Venus occurred on 24 and 25 December in the typical pair-fashion, which is associated with major earthquakes. It preceded the mega-thrust earthquake on 26 December.
