On 17 August 1906 a great earthquake occurred near the coast of Central Chile at a depth of 35 km. The seismic event occurred at 00:40:04 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 8.2. Another great earthquake occurred about 30 minutes earlier.
In 1905 and 1906 the positions of Uranus and Neptune and also Jupiter made Earth to align with them in an in-between manner which caused the Moon to make critical geometry with two gas giants on opposite sides within a few hours. All six M 7.8+ earthquakes in 1906 occurred under these conditions.
While some planetary conjunctions occurred from 10 to 19 August 1906, the most critical of them occurred after the earthquake, except for the right angle that Mercury formed with Venus and Earth on the 15th. However, lunar geometry became very critical on 15-16 August. First the lunar conjunction with Jupiter occurred late on the 15th. Two opposing lunar conjunctions then occurred with both Uranus and Neptune on the 16th. This geometry happened earlier that year and resulted in the major earthquake in San Francisco. Both SSGI graphs below depict the critical lunar geometry on 15-16 August as a high lunar peak, that was followed by two great earthquakes within 24 hours. It is very uncommon for two great earthquakes to occur in such short time (30 minutes). On average, great earthquakes occur less than once a year, although there are some exceptions, such as in 2004.
