Mw 7.4 Near South Coast of Honshu, Japan

updated 23 December 2022

report

On 21 January 1906 a major earthquake occurred near the south coast of Honshu, Japan at a depth of 300 km. The seismic event occurred at 13:49:33 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.4.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event are the two planetary conjunctions Earth-Mercury-Uranus and Mercury-Earth-Neptune on 17 and 19 January, followed by lunar semi-right angles with both outer planets on 19 January.

In 1906 Uranus and Neptune were on opposite sides of the Solar System. This resulted several times in (near) conjunctions with Earth as well as critical lunar geometry with both outer planets. This type of lunar geometry with outer planets is associated with major to great earthquakes and several of them occurred in 1905 and 1906 following this geometry. In 1906 alone 22 earthquakes occurred with magnitude 7 and larger, seven of which with magnitude 7.8 and larger and five with magnitude 8.

On 16 January 1906 opposite lunar right angles occurred with Uranus and Neptune within 5 hours. The same geometry two weeks later preceded the mega-thrust earthquake at Northern Ecuador. On 17 and 19 January Mercury moved between Uranus and Neptune with Earth, which resulted in the planetary conjunctions Earth-Mercury-Uranus and Mercury-Earth-Neptune. Also on 19 January lunar semi-right angles with both outer planets occurred, followed by a lunar conjunction with Jupiter on the 20th, which resulted in a high lunar peak.
