On 1 August 1629 a mega-thrust earthquake occurred in the Banda Sea. The seismic event occurred at 01:30:00 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 8.8.
The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is the Mars-Mercury-Neptune conjunction on 28 July 1629 and the following lunar conjunction with Mars on 29 July.
The planetary conjunction Mars-Mercury-Neptune is comparable to Mars-Mercury-Uranus that preceded the mega-thrust earthquakes in 1960 and 1964. The lunar conjunction with Mars around the same time is also consistent. Next to that, Venus was in a conjunction with Earth and Jupiter on 22 July and lunar right and semi-right angles occurred with Venus and Jupiter on 27 and 30-31 July. A critical right angle pair of Mercury and Venus with Saturn occurred on 29 July and 1 August while a similar semi-right angle pair of Mercury and Venus with Uranus occurred on 30-31 July.
