Mw 6.8 Switzerland

updated 23 December 2022

report

On 18 October 1356 a strong earthquake occurred near Basel, Switzerland. The seismic event occurred around 21:00 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.7-6.9.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is Earth's position between Jupiter and Saturn when lunar conjunctions occurred with both outer planets within 1 hour on 17 October 1356.

From August to October 1356 Earth's position between Jupiter and Saturn resulted in two planetary conjunctions. The first conjunction occurred on 23 August at 6:25:58 UTC. The second conjunction occurred on 22 October at 14:48:26 UTC. Both times the Moon made critical conjunctions with the outer planets within about 1 hour, effectively forming near quadruple planetary/lunar conjunctions, which resulted in high lunar peaks. In August the lunar conjunctions occurred on the 23rd at 14:54:00 (Jupiter) and at 14:58:59 (Saturn), which were followed by a major earthquake the next day. In October the lunar conjunctions occurred on the 17th at 12:00:29 (Jupiter) and at 13:10:19 (Saturn), followed by the strong earthquake in Switzerland the next day.

In the same period from August to October 1356 Earth also formed two planetary conjunctions with Mars and Neptune, which occurred on 8 August and on 9 October. These planetary conjunctions resulted in critical lunar geometry with Mars and Neptune, which occurred in the days before both earthquakes in August and October and in the same fashion (right angles followed by semi-right angles).
