Mw 7.5 Azores-Cape St. Vincent Ridge

updated 23 December 2022

report

On 24 August 1356 a major earthquake occurred at the Azores-Cape St. Vincent Ridge. The seismic event had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.5.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is Earth's position between Jupiter and Saturn when lunar conjunctions occurred with both outer planets within 5 minutes on 23 August 1356.

In the morning of 23 August 1356 a planetary conjunction occurred with Earth between the outer planets Jupiter and Saturn. These type of planetary conjunctions are especially critical when the Moon makes specific geometry with both outer planets, like conjunctions, right and semi-right angles. On 20 August lunar semi-right angles already occurred with Jupiter and Saturn within 1 hour. Hours after the planetary conjunction on 23 August, critical lunar conjunctions occurred with the outer planets within 5 minutes, which resulted in a high lunar peak. In addition, Earth was also in a near conjunction with Mars and Neptune and critical lunar geometry occurred involving both outer planets on 19 and 23 August.

The very same geometry with Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and Neptune occurred in October 1356, which resulted in a strong earthquake in Switzerland.
