On 18 March 1068 a major earthquake occurred in the Near East. The seismic event occurred in the morning and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.0. It was the first of two strong to major earthquakes in the region within a few months.
The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of two planetary conjunctions involving Earth on 17 March 1068.
From 11 to 18 March 1068 six planetary conjunctions occurred. A first near convergence of planetary conjunctions occurred within 24 hours on 11-12 March with Venus-Mars-Saturn and Mercury-Mars-Jupiter. On 13 March the planetary conjunction Sun-Mercury-Venus occurred. On 17 March a convergence of two planetary conjunctions occurred within about six hours with Mercury-Earth-Saturn and Sun-Earth-Jupiter.
