The megathrust earthquake near the south coast of western Honshu, Japan on 28 October 1707 was preceded by a tight convergence of critical planetary and lunar geometry on 25-26 October. As Earth was closely aligned between Venus and Neptune, the Moon aligned (0°) with both planets on the 25th, hours before New Moon. On the 26th a tight convergence of lunar geometry occurred with Moon-Saturn at 135° and Moon-Jupiter at 45° around the time that the Moon aligned (0°) with Mars. In addition, a convergence of two planetary alignments occurred involving both Mercury (Sun-Mercury-Mars) and Venus (Venus-Sun-Neptune). This is a critical combination, especially near Full or New Moon (compare 4-5 February 2023).
