Mw 7.6 Drake Passage

On 10 October 2025 a major earthquake occurred at Drake Passage at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 20:29:22 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.6.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of critical planetary and lunar geometry on 8-9 October 2025.

In October 2025 Earth moved between Venus and Saturn, reaching a conjunction (0°) on the 11th. Due to this geometry, opposing semi-right angle lunar geometry occurred on 8-9 October with Venus (135°) and Saturn (45°), and also with Neptune (45°). This lunar geometry converged with a lunar conjunction with Mars (0°) on 8 October.

It is the second major tremor at the Drake Passage within two months.
