Mw 7.5 Drake Passage

On 22 August 2025 a major earthquake occurred at the Drake Passage at a depth of 5.8 km. The seismic event occurred at 02:16:19 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.5.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of critical lunar geometry on 18-19 August 2025.

In July 2025 Earth moved between Mars on one side and Saturn-Neptune on the other side. This configuration caused critical lunar geometry (0°, 45°, 90°, 135°), resulting in major earthquakes in July, August and September.

Critical lunar geometry with Mars, Saturn and Neptune was very tight in July and August 2025. On 15 August opposing semi-right angle lunar geometry (45°, 135°) occurred with the three planets, followed by opposing right-angle geometry (90°) on 18-19 August, converging with a lunar conjunction (0°) with Jupiter on the 19th.
