Mw 7.4 Drake Passage

On 2 May 2025 a major earthquake occurred at Drake Passage at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 12:58:27 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.4.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a planetary conjunction with Earth, Venus and Neptune on 2 May 2025.

On 2 May Earth reached an exact conjunction with Venus and Neptune. This geometry was preceded by significant lunar geometry, starting on 27-28 April, which resulted in clustering of stronger earthquakes, peaking M 6.8 on the 29th. On 30 April a lunar conjunction occurred with Jupiter. Atmospheric anomalies were recorded on 22 and 25 April sith a strength of 3.0 and 3.5 mV respectively.
