Mw 6.8 Macquarie Island Region

On 29 April 2025 a strong earthquake occurred at Macquarie Island Region at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 14:53:38 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.8.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of critical lunar geometry on 27-28 April 2025.

On 27 and 28 April semi-right angle lunar geometry occurred with Jupiter and Saturn. This geometry converged with a lunar conjunction with the Sun (New Moon), followed by a lunar conjunction with Uranus. Convergence of this kind of lunar geometry often results in strong earthquakes in the mid to high 6 magnitude range.
