Mw 6.6 Southeast Indian Ridge

On 16 April 2025 a strong earthquake occurred at Southeast Indian Ridge at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 01:43:01 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.6.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a lunar conjunction on 15 April 2025.

A planetary conjunction with Mercury, the Sun and Uranus on the 10th converged with multiple lunar conjunctions involving Venus, Saturn and Neptune early on the 11th. A critical planetary conjunction with Venus, Mercury and Neptune occurred early on the 12th, close to Full Moon. A notable temporal cluster of stronger (M ≥ 5.5) earthquakes early on the 13th peaked magnitude 6.5 South of Fiji Islands. A lunar conjunction with Uranus on the 15th was followed by a second cluster of stronger earthquakes peaking magnitude 6.6 at the Southeast Indian Ridge.
