Mw 6.7 Off West Coast of South Island, New Zealand

On 25 March 2025 a strong earthquake occurred off the West coast of South Island, New Zealand at a depth of 9 km. The seismic event occurred at 01:43:12 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.7.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of lunuar geometry around 24-25 March 2025.

A lunar conjunction (0°) with Mars late on 23 March occurred in a near convergence with lunar semi-right angle geometry (45°, 135°) with Jupiter and Saturn on 24-25 March. This lunar geometry converged with four planetary conjunctions in the same time-frame: Sun:Venus-Earth, Mercury:Sun-Neptune, Sun:Mercury-Earth and Sun:Mercury-Venus. The planetary conjunctions were part of a near quintuple conjunction involving Earth, Venus, Mercury, the Sun and Neptune. This geometry was followed three days later by a major earthquake (M 7.7) at Myanmar.
