Mw 7.0 Offshore Northern California

On 5 December 2024 a major earthquake occurred at Offshore Northern California at a depth of 15 km. The seismic event occurred at 18:44:24 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.0.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is Earth's position between Venus and Mars and the subsequent critical lunar geometry.

In early December 2024 Earth began moving between Venus and Mars. As a result critical lunar geomery occurred with both planets, most notably lunar semi-right angle geometry on 1-2 December and a lunar conjunction/opposition earlier on 5 December. In addition, two planetary conjunctions occurred involving Mercury, one of which with Earth on 3 and 4 December.

This was the first major (M ≥ 7) earthquake since 17 August.

The conjunction of Venus, Earth and Mars was exact on 12 December, converging with the critical Mercury-Venus-Neptune conjunction. A major earthquake (Mw 7.3) occurred early on 17 December.
