Mw 7.2 Near Coast of Southern Peru

On 28 June 2024 a major earthquake occurred near the coast of Southern Peru at a depth of 30 km. The seismic event occurred at 05:36:38 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.2.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a near convergence of planetary conjunctions involving Venus and Mercury on 22-24 June 2024.

Some clustering of stronger earthquakes occurred at Full Moon on 21-22 June. Stronger tremors occurred with the near convergence of planetary conjuctions with Venus and Mercury on 22-24 June, peaking magnitude 6.3. An obvious seismic response was anticipated to occur on 24-25 June. But the major earthquake occurred after the lunar conjunction on 27 June, which triggered an additional cluster of stronger tremors on 27-28 June.

This major earthquake directly prompted the revision of the SSGI algorithm regarding lunar conjunctions with outer planets.
