Mw 6.5 Bonin Islands, Japan Region

On 27 April 2024 a strong earthquake occurred at Bonin Islands, Japan Region at a depth of 497 km. The seismic event occurred at 08:35:34 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.5.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of two lunar conjunctions on 25 April 2024.

A near convergence of planetary conjunctions on 21-22 April initially resulted in a notable cluster of stronger earthquakes at Taiwan on 22 April, which is considered a series of aftershocks of the major earthquake on 2 April. A Full Moon on 23 April was followed by a convergence of lunar conjunctions two days later. As a result, stronger seismic activity was anticipated to occur around 27 April. A cluster of strong tremors indeed occurred on 26-27 April, peaking magnitude 6.5. Atmospheric fluctuations on 25 April marked the Bonin Islands.
