Mw 6.5 New Britain Region, P.N.G.

On 14 April 2024 a strong earthquake occurred at New Britain Region, P.N.G. at a depth of 51 km. The seismic event occurred at 20:56:28 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.5.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of planetary conjunctions around 10 April 2024.

A convergence of four planetary conjunctions involving Mercury and Venus occurred from 9 to 11 April. A warning was issued that this convergence could trigger major to great seismic activity, but that did not happen, despite the convergence with two lunar conjunctions on 10 April with Jupiter and Uranus. Two strong tremors occurred early on, on the 9th, peaking magnitude 6.4. During the time that was considered most critical, from 11 to 13 April, only a small clustering of stronger tremors occurred peaking magnitude 5.8. An atmospheric anomaly for the region was detected on 9 April.
