Mw 6.9 Maug Islands Region, North Mariana Islands

On 24 November 2023 a strong earthquake occurred at Maug Islands Region, North Mariana Islands at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 09:05:03 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.9.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is critical lunar geometry with Mars and Uranus on 23 November 2023.

On 11 November 2023 Earth moved between Mars and Uranus allowing for critical lunar geometry with the 2 outer planets, i.e. opposing right angles and semi-right angles. The first pair of right angles occurred on 5-6 November, resulting in major seismic activity on 8 November. The first pair of semi-right angles occurred on 16-17 November, which resulted in a strong earthquake at Mindanao, Philippines on 17 November. The second pair of right angles (when the Moon moved to the other side of the Mars-Uranus line after 13 November) occurred on 19-20 November and resulted in a strong tremor at Vanuatu on 22 November. The second pair of semi-right angles occurred on 23 November and resulted in the strong earthquake in the Maug Islands region.

In total, 6 earthquakes ranging from magnitude 6.7 to 7.1 occurred from 8 to 24 November with the passing of Earth between Mars and Uranus, an average of 2.6 days. Average occurrence of magnitude 6.7 and larger earthquakes from 2020 to 2023 was 12.3 days.
