On 22 November 2023 a strong earthquake occurred at Vanuatu at a depth of 15 km. The seismic event occurred at 04:47:32 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.7.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is critical lunar geometry on 19-20 November 2023.

On 11 November Earth moved between Mars and Uranus allowing for critical lunar geometry with the two outer planets. Opposing lunar right angles occurred on 5-6 November and were followed by major seismic activity on 8 November. Likewise, opposing lunar semi-right angles occurred on 16-17 November, resulting in a strong tremor on 17 November. The seismic event at Vanuatu occurred within 2 days of the second pair of opposing lunar right angles with Mars and Uranus on 19-20 November.

In total, 6 earthquakes ranging from magnitude 6.7 to 7.1 occurred from 8 to 24 November with the passing of Earth between Mars and Uranus, an average of 2.6 days. Average occurrence of magnitude 6.7 and larger earthquakes from 2020 to 2023 was 12.3 days.
