Mw 6.3 West of Macquarie Island

On 11 October 2023 a strong earthquake occurred west of Macquarie Island at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 20:05:00 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.3.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of critical planetary and lunar geometry on 9-10 October 2023.

On 9 October a planetary conjunction occurred with the Sun, Venus and Uranus. It was followed by a planetary conjunction with Venus, Earth and Saturn. This conjunction converged with lunar conjunctions involving Venus and Saturn. As a result, a high lunar peak converged with the planetary conjunction on 10 October.
