Mw 6.1 Izu Islands, Japan Region

On 6 October 2023 a strong earthquake occurred at Izu Islands, Japan Region at a depth of 13 km. The seismic event occurred at 01:31:18 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.1.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is Earth's conjunction with Mercury and Neptune on 2 October 2023.

On 2 October 2023 a Mercury-Earth-Neptune conjunction occurred at 15:21 UTC. It converged with two lunar conjunctions, the first with Jupiter at 01:10 and the second with Uranus at 15:28. A cluster of strong earthquakes commenced, in particular an earthquake swarm at the Izu Islands, following this planetary and lunar geometry. This cluster peaked M 6.4 in Mindanao, Philippines.
