Mw 6.0 Central East Pacific Rise

On 20 September 2023 a strong earthquake occurred at Central East Pacific Rise at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 14:45:59 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.0.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of planetary conjunctions on 19 September 2023.

On 19 September two planetary conjunctions converged involving Mercury and also Earth. The first conjunction was with the Sun, Mercury and Uranus at 9:10 UTC. The second conjunction with the Sun, Earth and Neptune occurred less than two hours later. This planetary geometry converged with a lunar conjunction with Jupiter at 09:30 UTC. Anticipated larger seismic activity, potentially reaching higher 6 magnitude, did not occur. Instead, a significant clustering of nine stronger (M ≥ 5.6) earthquakes occurred from the 19th to the 21st, peaking magnitude 6.1 on the 21st.
