Mw 6.5 South of Kermadec Islands

On 8 September 2023 a strong earthquake occurred south of Kermadec Islands at a depth of 78 km. The seismic event occurred at 09:09:51 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.5.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of four planetary and two lunar conjunctions from 4 to 6 September 2023.

On 4 September two planetary conjunctions occurred. The first conjunction at 03:21 UTC involved the Sun, Mercury and Saturn. The second conjunction occurred at 23:35 UTC and involved the Sun, Venus and Neptune. On 6 September two more planetary conjunctions occurred almost at the same time. The first conjunction occurred at 07:39 UTC and involved Venus, Mercury and Mars. The second conjunction occurred less than 4 hours later and involved the Sun, Mercury and Earth. Critical lunar conjunctions (with outer planets) converged with the planetary conjunctions; on the 4th a lunar conjunction with Jupiter at 17:28 UTC was followed by a lunar conjunction with Uranus on the 5th at 06:48 UTC. Due to this convergence a clustering of strong to major seismic activity was antcipated to occur from approximately 5 to 7 September.
