Mw 6.1 Santiago del Estero, Argentina

updated 29 August 2023

report

On 23 August 2023 a strong earthquake occurred at Santiago del Estero, Argentina at a depth of 558 km. The seismic event occurred at 14:22:43 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.1.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of planetary and lunar geometry on 22-23 August 2023.

On 22 August Earth was between Mars and Neptune. This geometry converged with a high lunar peak, partially due to a lunar conjunction with Jupiter early on 23 August, but primarily because of lunar semi-right angles with Mars and Neptune, which was the tightest lunar geometry (within 6 minutes) with these planets in the 2023 approach.

Earth's position between Mars and Neptune resulted in critical lunar geometry in August 2023, most notably double right angles on 26 August, which can result in major to great seismic activity, often within about 3 days. A major earthquake occurred on 28 August deep below the Bali sea.
