Mw 6.2 Santiago del Estero, Argentina

On 5 August 2023 a strong earthquake occurred at Santiago del Estero, Argentina at a depth of 585 km. The seismic event occurred at 07:20:07 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.2.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a near convergence of lunar conjunctions on 3-4 August.

Opposite lunar conjunctions occurred on 3 and 4 August with Saturn and Mars respectively. These conjunctions were preceded by a convergence of two planetary conjunctions on 31 July and another planetary conjunction near Full Moon on 2 August involving Mercury, Earth and Saturn. Larger seismic activity was anticipated, but it did not exceed Mw 6.2 on 5 August.
