Mw 7.1 Alaska Peninsula

On 16 July 2023 a major earthquake occurred at Alaska Peninsula at a depth of 25 km. The seismic event occurred at 06:48:21 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.1.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of planetary conjunctions on 15-16 July 2023.

On 15 July a planetary conjunction occurred with Mercury, the Sun and Neptune. It was followed a few hours later by a planetary conjunction with the Sun, Mercury and Mars. At the time of these conjunctions, Earth and Venus were in a near conjunction with Mars and Saturn and their conjunctions were exact on 18 and 20 July. A strong earthquake, Mw 6.7 in Argentina, occurred a day later, on 17 July at the the time of a planetary conjunction with Mars, Mercury and Neptune. It was the third conjunction of a near quadruple conjunction with Mars, Mercury, the Sun and Neptune from 15 to 17 July. Earlier, on 13 July, opposing lunar right angles occurred with Mars and Saturn.
