Mw 6.3 North of Halmahera, Indonesia

On 23 February 2023 a strong earthquake occurred north of Halmahera, Indonesia at a depth of 95 km. The seismic event occurred at 20:02:48 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.3.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a lunar conjunction with Jupiter on 22 Fabruary 2023.

On 20 February 2023 a lunar conjunction with Saturn was followed several hours later by a lunar conjunction with the Sun (New Moon). As a result seismic activity was expected to peak around the 22nd. On the 22nd a lunar conjunction also occurred with Jupiter.
