Mw 7.8 Central Turkey

On 6 February 2023 a major earthquake occurred in Central Turkey at a depth of 20 km. The seismic event occurred at 01:17:36 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.8.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of critical planetary and lunar geometry on 4-5 February 2023.

Critical lunar geometry first occurred on 1-2 February 2023 and larger seismic activity was estimated to potentially occur around 4 February as a result. A convergence of critical planetary geometry occurred on 4-5 February with the planetary conjunctions Sun-Venus-Jupiter and Mercury-Sun-Uranus. It coincided with a lunar conjunction (Full Moon) on 5 February, just hours after the second planetary conjunction. As a result of this planetary and lunar geometry larger seismic activity was anticipated to occur from 4 to 6 February. A weak atmospheric fluctuation on 29 January indicated regions close to the epicentre of the major earthquake.

Shortly after the major earthquake, a strong aftershock occurred with an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.7. Hours later a second major earthquake occurred with an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.5.
