Mw 6.4 Offshore Northern California

On 20 December 2022 a strong earthquake occurred offshore northern California at a depth of 17 km. The seismic event occurred at 10:34:26 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.4.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a lunar conjunction with Uranus early on 20 December, which occurred at the time of a near convergence of two planetary conjunctions on 19 and 21 December.

Significant planetary geometry occurred on 15 and 16 December with Mercury and Venus (PGme(r) and PGve(r). On 19 December the Sun-Mercury-Neptune conjunction occurred, followed two days later by Venus-Mercury-Mars. The earthquake occurred several hours after the lunar conjunction with Uranus early on 20 December.
