On 11 November 2022 a major earthquake occurred at Tonga at a depth of 25 km. The seismic event occurred at 10:48:45 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.3. It was the second major earthquake in the region in two days. A third strong to major earthquake occurred a day later.
A convergence of four planetary conjunctions, which resulted in the near quadruple conjunction Mercury-Sun-Earth-Uranus, occurred on 8-9 November and was likely to trigger strong to major seismic activity from 9 to 11 November, especially since it coincided with four lunar conjunctions on 8 November, three of which involved the same three celestial bodies Mercury, the Sun (Full Moon and lunar eclipse) and Uranus, effectively making it a quintuple planetary-lunar conjunction. In addition, two right angles of Mercury and Venus also occurred on 8 November, both with Mars and Saturn.
