Mw 6.8 Easter Island Region
updated 30 November 2022

On 12 July 2022 a strong earthquake occurred in the Easter Island Region at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 19:16:59 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.8.

Due to critical planetary geometry from 7 to 10 July there was a high probability of strong to major seismic activity from 9 to 14 July with a slight possibility of a great earthquake. For more details watch the warning video below. Atmospheric signals on 7 and 9 July pointed to a longitude that crossed Alaska and slightly west of the East Pacific Rise.
