Mw 6.0 South Sandwich Islands Region

On 6 March 2022 a strong earthquake occurred in the South Sandwich Islands Region at a depth of 20 km. The seismic event occurred at 20:14:31 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.0.

A day earlier a warning was issued for possible strong to major seismic activity due to a near convergence of three planetary conjunctions on 5 and 6 March. Two strong earthquakes occurred on the 6th and 7th as a result, but the tremors could potentially have been stronger. See also the Telegram post below.
