Mw 6.1 Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge
updated 6 January 2022

On 4 January 2022 a strong earthquake occurred at the Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 03:18:37 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.1.

Critical planetary geometry occurred from 29 to 31 December, which could potentially have caused a great earthquake (Mw 8-9), especially 1-3 January. This did not happen this time and instead a series of low 6 magnitude earthquakes occurred on 3-4 January. A major earthquake occurred early in this critical time-frame in Indonesia.
