On 12 August 2021 a great earthquake occurred in the South Sandwich Islands Region at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 18:35:22 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 8.0. It was preceded three minutes earlier by a Mw 7.7 earthquake.
Planetary geometry had been critical since 7 August and warnings were issued as early as 6 August that 10-14 August would be very critical with the possibility of one or two mid to high 7 magnitude earthquakes. A Mw 7.1 earthquake first occurred on the 11th in Mindanao, Philippines. The earthquakes on 12 August occurred a day after the lunar peak that followed on the planetary peaks (alignments). Additional major seismic activity occurred on the 14th with a Mw 6.9-7.0 earthquake at the Alaska Peninsula and a Mw 7.2 earthquake in Haiti.
