Mw 7.5 Peru-Ecuador Border Region
updated 29 May 2022

On 22 February 2019 a major earthquake occurred at the Peru-Ecuador Border Region at a depth of 140 km. The seismic event occurred at 10:17:22 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.5.

Critical planetary and lunar geometry began on 16 February when Venus aligned with Mercury and Uranus, while Earth was already lining up with Venus and Saturn with the Moon opposing both planets. A high lunar peak (index 16) occurred a day later, which is when a strong earthquake occurred in the New Ireland Region. It was the first more significant seismic event in almost three weeks. On 18 February Earth's alignment with Venus and Saturn was exact, while Earth was yet again forming an alignment involving Mercury and Neptune, which became exact on 19 February, hours before Full Moon. Another high lunar peak (index 17) followed on 20 February, partially due to the Moon's alignment with Mercury and Neptune. Although the primary focus was on 19-21 February, the anticipated major earthquake occurred in the morning of 22 February.
