Mw 6.6 Chiapas, Mexico
updated 29 May 2022

On 1 February 2019 a strong earthquake occurred in Chiapas, Mexico at a depth of 70 km. The seismic event occurred at 16:14:12 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.6.

The critical alignment Venus-Mercury-Neptune occurred on 29 January and was followed by a high lunar peak (index 18) on 30-31 January. A small clustering of strong earthquakes occurred as a result, peaking magnitude 6.6 in Chiapas, Mexico. From January to May 2019 the planets Mercury, Venus and Neptune lined up four times. While alignments of these planets can potentially trigger major to great earthquakes (Mw 7.8+), this does not happen every time, as it also depends on the condition of Earth's crust and whether or not a fault section on the planet has reached sufficient stress to be released in such major seismic event. A major earthquake related to this particular alignment happened in January 2018. The fourth time that Mercury, Venus and Neptune aligned in 2019 was on 25 May, which triggered a great earthquake in Northern Peru.
