On 17 July 2017 a major earthquake occurred in the Komandorskiye Ostrova Region at a depth of 30 km. The seismic event occurred at 23:34:16 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.7.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of three planetary conjunctions on 15 and 16 July, all of which involved Mercury and the outer planets Jupiter and Uranus, which were on opposite sides of the Solar System.

After the planetary conjunction Jupiter-Sun-Uranus on 11 July 2017, Mercury moved into conjunctions with the Sun and both outer planets within two hours on 15 July. Less than 24 hours later Mercury moved between the two planets, forming a third conjunction within one day. In addition, lunar conjunctions also involving Jupiter and Uranus occurred within 24 hours early on 16 and 17 July. Also of significance were two planetary right angles with Venus and Earth involving Neptune on 15 and 17 July.
