Mw 6.7 Solomon Islands
updated 16 August 2021

On 19 January 2017 a strong earthquake occurred at the Solomon Islands at a depth of 6 km. The seismic event occurred at 23:04:16 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.7.

Three planetary alignments from 16 to 19 January preceded the earthquake, most notably Mercury-Mars-Uranus on the 17th. A fourth alignment, Mercury-Sun-Uranus occurred hours after the earthquake. A high lunar peak occurred earlier on the 19th, reaching index 18, which was partially the result of the Moon's alignment with Jupiter and Uranus, both of which were involved in alignments with Mercury a few days earlier. Much larger seismic activity — well over magnitude 7 within 3-4 days — should be anticipated with a convergence of critical planetary and lunar geometry like this. It also depends on the condition of Earth's crust, whether or not a fault section has reached a critical amount of stress. In this case it happened on 22 January when a Mw 7.9 earthquake occurred in the Bougainville Region, P.N.G. The strong earthquake at the Solomon Islands could be considered precursor activity as it happened within the critical time-frame associated with the critical planetary and lunar geometry.
