Mw 7.0 South of Fiji Islands
updated 16 August 2021

On 3 January 2017 a major earthquake occurred South of Fiji Islands at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 21:52:31 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.0.

Two planetary alignments preceded the earthquake, most notably Mercury-Venus-Uranus on 30 December. Following these planetary alignments, a lunar peak occurred on 2 and into 3 January reaching 16, indicating a strong convergence of critical lunar geometry. Part of this geometry is the Moon's alignment with Mars and Neptune early on the 3rd.
