Mw 6.7 Kepulauan Barat Daya, Indonesia
updated 9 August 2021

On 21 December 2016 a strong earthquake occurred in Kepulauan Barat Daya, Indonesia at a depth of 177 km. The seismic event occurred at 00:17:17 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.7.

December 2016 — starting on the 6th — was considered very critical due to an unusual number of planetary alignments. From the 6th to the 30th fifteen alignments occurred, which is an average of one alignment per less than two days.

The strong earthquake in Kepulauan Barat Daya, Indonesia occurred after a series of three planetary alignments from the 16th to the 18th, most notably Sun-Mercury-Uranus on the 16th — which was followed by a major earthquake (Mw 7.9) on the 17th — and more directly Mercury-Venus-Uranus on the 18th, which is when lunar geometry peaked 13 and 12 into the 19th.
