Mw 8.3 Offshore Coquimbo, Chile

updated 20 February 2025

report

On 16 September 2015 a great earthquake occurred at Offshore Coquimbo, Chile at a depth of 30 km. The seismic event occurred at 22:54:31 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 8.3.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is critical lunar geometry due to Earth's position between Jupiter and Neptune.

A very tight convergence of semi-right angle lunar geometry with Jupiter and Neptune occurred early on 16 September due to Earth's position between the two outer planets. The Jupiter-Earth-Neptune conjunction was exact about 5 hours after the earthquake occurred. Great earthquakes (M ≥ 8) tend to occur more often when outer planets are near opposite sides of the Solar System. A good example is the time around 1906, when the outermost planets Uranus and Neptune were on opposite sides of the Solar System. In 1906 no less than six M ≥ 7.8 earthquakes occurred, four of which reached M 8. This particular geometry with these two planets will not occur again until around 2070 due to their low orbital velocity. But great earthquakes also tend to occur with other outer planets in opposite positions because of the resulting convergence of opposite lunar geometry, such as in 2011 (M 9 Japan) when Jupiter and Saturn were on opposite sides, or in 1700 (M 9 Cascadia) when Earth was between Jupiter and Uranus.
