Mw 6.6 Gulf of California

On 13 September 2015 a strong earthquake occurred at Gulf of California at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 08:14:12 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.6.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of planetary and lunar conjunctions from 10 to 13 September 2015.

A critical planetary conjunction occurred on 10 September with Venus between Jupiter and Neptune. It converged with two lunar conjunctions with Venus and Mars respectively. On 12 September lunar conjunctions converged involving Jupiter and Neptune, as Earth was moving between the two outer planets. A New Moon occurred early on the 13th. The earthquake was part of a temporal cluster of stronger earthquakes on the 13th.

Earth's position between Jupiter and Neptune (i.e. Jupiter and Neptune on opposite sides) resulted in extremely critical lunar geometry with both outer planets. A mega-thrust earthquake with magnitude 8.3 occurred later on the 16th offshore Coquimbo, Chile. At the time this report was written (February 2025), it was still the largest recorded earthquake.
